QUICK ANSWER

What you need to know

Learn how to compare US AI offers across ten roles, location-specific pay bands, bonuses and equity, with worked examples and a transparent catalogue-coverage snapshot.

A US AI offer may contain base salary, a conditional cash bonus, equity and benefits with different eligibility dates. Comparing only the largest number can hide a lower recurring base or an award that will not vest during the time you expect to stay. Begin with the exact role, hiring location and compensation components rather than a national average for a broad title.

This guide provides a ten-role comparison framework, a fictional USD offer exercise and questions for location-specific bands, equity schedules and first-year rewards. It does not publish a market salary range from unverified catalogue fields. The arithmetic examples are hypothetical, not observations of employers or advice about the value of any investment.

What our United States salary data can and cannot show

Snapshot: 17 October 2026, 10:47 UTC. Among 892 published, not-closed United States catalogue records, 688 had a salary field containing a nonzero digit. That is 77.1% of this catalogue cohort, not a verified employer salary-disclosure rate or a national labour-market statistic. Counts are a dated snapshot, not live counters.

The read-only audit used stored country codes, falling back to country names only when the code was missing. It did not revisit employer pages, normalize currencies or pay periods, distinguish base pay from total rewards, or remove cross-posted requisitions beyond existing catalogue identity controls. Numeric text can include incomplete, stale or incorrectly extracted amounts.

No national or role-level salary range is estimated from this audit. Even a large count does not establish comparability. A future pay benchmark needs employer-source checks, a defined collection window, consistent currency and period, separated seniority and locations, and deduplication rules. Missing salaries are unknown, never zero.

The US cohort has more numeric salary fields than the other country cohorts in this release. That is useful for deciding where to investigate source data first, but it does not validate the amounts or establish a national pay distribution. A location-spanning band, a base-only amount and a total-rewards estimate cannot be pooled as though they measure the same thing.

Scope to compare
AI Engineer94 / 76Application integration, validation and operational ownership; this broad title uses the ML group only as a catalogue proxy.
Machine Learning Engineer94 / 76Training, feature pipelines and deployed prediction systems; compare responsibility for production behaviour.
Generative AI Engineer117 / 89Generation workflows, grounding and evaluation; distinguish prototypes from supported production features.
Data Scientist55 / 38Statistical analysis, experimentation and decision support; check whether the role also owns deployed models.
LLM Engineer29 / 27Model adaptation, inference or evaluation; clarify whether the work includes training infrastructure.
RAG Engineer4 / 3Retrieval, indexing, permissions and evidence quality; compare scale and document-maintenance duties.
AI Agent Engineer220 / 163Tool execution, approvals and recovery; ask who is accountable for external side effects.
Data Engineer13 / 10Reliable data ingestion and delivery for AI; clarify on-call, platform and quality ownership.
MLOps Engineer44 / 34Model releases, monitoring and incident recovery; compare service scope and operational burden.
Computer Vision Engineer3 / 2Image or video models, data collection and deployment; check hardware and field-testing responsibilities.

Counts use exact primary-specialization groups, not title matching. AI Engineer and ML Engineer intentionally share the Machine Learning proxy pool; they are not separate samples and must not be added together. Other titles can also map imperfectly to their named specialization. A zero means no matching catalogue record at this snapshot, not no jobs or no salary in the country. These are coverage counts, not pay rankings. On mobile, scroll the table horizontally if needed.

Ask whether the position is product engineering, research, customer deployment or platform operations. A specialist title does not guarantee a higher band than a broad engineering title. An individual-contributor role with major service ownership can differ materially from another job with the same seniority label. Confirm the employer's actual level and evaluation criteria instead of mapping titles across companies by wording alone.

Read the posted band as an employer-specific statement

Google Careers Help explains that its US posting ranges depend on role, level and location, and describes its published compensation details as base salary excluding bonus, equity and benefits. This is an example of one employer's stated convention, not a claim that all job boards or employers label pay the same way. Read the current individual posting and ask the recruiter to reconcile any additional components shown there.

For any advertised band, record the employer, posting, date, eligible location and compensation basis. Ask which part of a broad range applies to your intended work location and level. Do not assume the maximum is an offer you will receive or that the midpoint is the average employee salary. A band is advertised potential pay under stated conditions, not a record of actual earnings.

If a posting changes during the interview process, keep your own dated notes and ask which version is relevant. Do not misrepresent a missing band as zero. This guide makes no statement about which laws require disclosures in particular jurisdictions; legal requirements and personal tax consequences need separate current information.

Separate cash, vesting and benefits

Recurring base and cash incentives

Use annual gross base pay as the first comparison line. Record target bonus separately, including eligibility, measurement period and any discretion. If a sign-on payment is offered, note its timing and repayment terms. Compare first-year and later-year cash independently so a one-time payment does not look like a permanent increase in salary.

Equity awards

Ask for the award type, number of units or shares, valuation date and actual vesting schedule. A four-year headline value is not four years of guaranteed spendable money. Uneven vesting, price changes and restrictions can make a simple division misleading. Private-company options also need exercise and liquidity questions that do not arise in the same way for ordinary recurring cash.

Keep an equity illustration outside your guaranteed-cash total. Do not assume unvested awards can pay rent or that an award quoted today will have the same value later. Obtain professional advice when evaluating investment, exercise or tax consequences; this guide does not recommend buying, selling or exercising any security.

Benefits and personal costs

Ask about the actual coverage, employee contribution, eligibility dates and retirement-plan terms rather than attaching a standard value to “benefits.” Two people can value the same coverage differently. Compare office attendance, travel and support hours with your own circumstances. Do not add an employer's stated benefits cost to your bank-account income.

Worked example: base pay and a four-year equity headline

These fictional figures are USD thousands, before taxes and deductions. Equity values are fixed only for this arithmetic illustration, and the example assumes equal annual vesting solely to show why timing matters. Neither the numbers nor the vesting pattern represent a market benchmark.

ComponentOffer AOffer B
Annual base salary150160
Annual target cash bonus158
One-time sign-on cash100
Illustrative four-year equity headline8040
Equity per year only under the equal-vesting assumption2010
Later-year base plus full target cash bonus165168

Under these assumptions, first-year target cash is 175 for A and 168 for B because A adds its one-time 10. Later-year target cash is 165 versus 168. If no bonus pays, recurring gross cash is 150 versus 160. Equity is not included in those cash totals. A combined illustration including equity would need to state its valuation and vesting assumptions explicitly; it should not be labelled guaranteed salary.

The point is not that either offer is better. One emphasizes a larger equity illustration and first-year incentive; the other has a higher recurring base. Ask whether the work scope, location, risk and benefits are otherwise comparable. Never compare one offer's base with another offer's base-plus-equity total without labelling the mismatch.

Levels, location and remote arrangements

For early-career roles, clarify training, project support and the expectations for independent delivery. For mid-level roles, ask which service or component you will own. For senior positions, identify architecture, mentoring and incident responsibilities. Years worked are context, not a universal level mapping. Present specific evidence of your scope instead of claiming every company should place you at the same grade.

For remote roles, confirm the approved employment location, time zone, office visits and what happens if you move. Do not infer a standard remote discount or city premium. Use your own dated cost assumptions when comparing two locations, and keep them distinct from the employer's offer. A larger nominal amount is not automatically greater purchasing power.

Recruiter questions and a negotiation response

  • Which level and work location does the proposed base range cover?
  • Is the advertised number base pay, target cash or a broader rewards figure?
  • When does bonus eligibility begin, and what is conditional?
  • What is the exact equity instrument and vesting schedule?
  • Are there sign-on repayment conditions or delayed benefit start dates?
  • Which on-call, travel and office-attendance expectations should I price into my decision?

An original practice response: “I am enthusiastic about the service ownership in this role. To compare the offer accurately, could you confirm the location-specific base band and separate the bonus, sign-on payment and equity schedule? I would like to discuss the recurring base in relation to the agreed responsibilities.” This is a truthful discussion framework, not a promise of a successful negotiation.
