Compare ten AI roles, understand fixed pay versus CTC, and work through two illustrative India offers using a transparent snapshot of salary coverage in our job catalogue.
An Indian AI offer is easier to judge when you separate what will be paid regularly from the employer's headline package. Start with the actual responsibilities, the annual fixed cash amount and the conditions attached to every other component. A large CTC number is not a promise of the same amount reaching your bank account.
This guide compares ten role scopes, explains a repeatable offer worksheet and shows how two fictional packages can lead to different decisions. It does not provide an unsupported national salary range. All monetary examples are hypothetical INR amounts for learning the comparison method, not recommendations about what an AI professional should earn.
What our India salary data can and cannot show
Snapshot: 17 October 2026, 10:47 UTC. Among 2,603 published, not-closed India catalogue records, 96 had a salary field containing a nonzero digit. That is 3.7% of this catalogue cohort, not a verified employer salary-disclosure rate or a national labour-market statistic. Counts are a dated snapshot, not live counters.
The read-only audit used stored country codes, falling back to country names only when the code was missing. It did not revisit employer pages, normalize currencies or pay periods, distinguish base pay from total rewards, or remove cross-posted requisitions beyond existing catalogue identity controls. Numeric text can include incomplete, stale or incorrectly extracted amounts.
No national or role-level salary range is estimated from this audit. Even a large count does not establish comparability. A future pay benchmark needs employer-source checks, a defined collection window, consistent currency and period, separated seniority and locations, and deduplication rules. Missing salaries are unknown, never zero.
The practical consequence is important: do not assume that the small subset with numeric salary text represents all the employers that omit pay. A missing amount says nothing reliable about how generous an employer will be. Ask for the budgeted band early enough to decide whether continuing the interview process makes sense.

Counts use exact primary-specialization groups, not title matching. AI Engineer and ML Engineer intentionally share the Machine Learning proxy pool; they are not separate samples and must not be added together. Other titles can also map imperfectly to their named specialization. A zero means no matching catalogue record at this snapshot, not no jobs or no salary in the country. These are coverage counts, not pay rankings. On mobile, scroll the table horizontally if needed.
An AI Engineer title can describe API integration in one company and end-to-end model delivery in another. For each role, write down what you will build, what can go wrong and who owns recovery. Compare offers with similar scope, location and employment arrangements before using a higher number from an unrelated role as negotiation evidence.
Fixed pay, variable pay and CTC: build separate columns
Ask the recruiter for an itemized annual breakdown. Keep recurring fixed cash, target performance pay, one-time joining money, employer-paid benefits and equity in separate rows. Do not add an employer contribution or insurance valuation to the cash you expect to receive every month. Ask payroll to explain which items are included in the stated fixed amount and which deductions would apply to your circumstances.
Recurring fixed cash
Record the annual gross cash amount and payment schedule in writing. Divide by twelve only to understand an average monthly gross equivalent; it is not a take-home calculation. A particular month's payment can differ because of the contract, start date or payroll treatment. If a letter uses several definitions of fixed pay, request a reconciliation rather than guessing which total is spendable.
Conditional rewards and joining money
For variable pay, ask for the target, eligibility date, measurement period and whether payout is discretionary. A target is not a guarantee. For a joining bonus, record the payment date, repayment conditions and whether it disappears from the second year. Keep an uncertain component outside your minimum recurring-cash comparison even when it belongs in an upside scenario.
Equity and employer-paid components
Ask whether equity is a share award, an option or another instrument, and obtain the actual vesting and exercise terms. A multi-year grant is not annual cash. Employer-paid retirement, insurance or other benefits may have value without being monthly salary. This guide does not calculate statutory contributions, taxes or the future value of stock; obtain current, situation-specific information before making those decisions.
Worked example: the larger CTC is not automatically better
The following offers are fictional and simplified. The amounts are INR lakh per year, except the one-time joining payment. They exclude taxes, deductions, benefits valuation and equity. They are not market benchmarks or descriptions of actual employers.
Component
Offer A
Offer B
Recurring fixed gross cash
18
20
Target variable cash, not guaranteed
3
1
One-time joining cash
2
0
First-year cash if full target pays
23
21
Later-year cash if full target pays
21
21
Offer A has the higher first-year target-inclusive total. Offer B has INR 2 lakh more recurring fixed gross cash. If variable pay is zero, the recurring comparison is 18 versus 20, not 23 versus 21. If both roles have similar scope and costs, someone prioritizing predictable recurring cash might prefer B. Someone valuing the one-time payment may judge differently, after checking repayment conditions. Neither choice follows from the headline alone.
For your worksheet, calculate recurring fixed cash first, then a separate full-target scenario, then a first-year scenario that adds joining money once. Do not assume the maximum scenario is the expected outcome, and do not count the same allowance in both fixed pay and a separate benefits row.
Experience levels: compare the ownership you can demonstrate
At an entry level, look for support, code review, clear tasks and genuine learning opportunities. A higher headline amount does not compensate for an undefined role in which a new engineer is expected to own an unreliable production service alone. Use internship or project evidence honestly; do not pretend that a portfolio is paid production experience.
At a mid-level, clarify whether you own a component, a service or several workflows. Discuss delivery, evaluation and debugging evidence, not only years worked. At a senior or lead level, ask about architecture decisions, mentoring, incident responsibility and cross-team influence. There is no universal conversion from years of experience to a salary band or company level.
Bengaluru, other cities and remote offers: use your actual costs
Do not apply a fixed city premium without evidence. Instead, build a personal comparison using rent, commuting, relocation, working hours and any required office attendance. Separate these personal costs from employer compensation. A remote offer can still specify an employment location and work schedule; confirm whether moving cities would change pay or require approval.
A useful decision note has three lines: the recurring cash difference, your own recurring cost difference and the non-cash trade-offs you value. Keep taxes outside this simple comparison until you have an appropriate current calculation. Currency conversion is unnecessary for two INR offers, but becomes a separate, dated assumption when comparing countries.
Questions and a professional negotiation script
What level and responsibilities does this offer cover, and what is the budgeted fixed-pay band?
Can you reconcile the CTC total with recurring gross cash and employer-paid components?
Which rewards are conditional, and when would I first qualify for them?
What happens to joining money if employment ends earlier than planned?
Which location, working hours and support duties are part of the agreement?
When is the next compensation review, and is any increase actually committed in writing?
An original example response: “I am interested in the role and the responsibility for production evaluation. Could we discuss the recurring fixed component separately from the joining payment? My decision depends on predictable annual cash and the agreed scope. Please share the approved fixed-pay range and the itemized package.” Adapt it to truthful evidence; do not invent competing offers.
If the recruiter cannot change fixed pay, ask which other terms are genuinely flexible. A clearer role, a documented location arrangement or a later start date can matter, but do not assign an invented cash value to every benefit. Keep a written record of agreed changes and verify they appear in the final offer.
Your final comparison checklist
Before deciding, confirm the employer identity, role scope, recurring amount, conditional items, notice terms, location and any repayment clause. Avoid sharing unredacted offer letters or personal identifiers publicly. A higher CTC can be attractive, but the decision should survive a zero-bonus scenario and the disappearance of one-time money in year two.
