Director, AI Platform Engineering

About this role

SS&C Advent seeks a Director, AI Platform Engineering to lead the design, development and scaling of a production-grade, multi-tenant AI agent platform. The platform will support agent workflows across investment management, data analytics and operations, building on the company’s enterprise big data platform. The role is hybrid, with locations listed as San Francisco, CA; Boston, MA; Waltham, MA; and NY, NY.

Responsibilities

  • Define the platform’s technical roadmap for multi-agent orchestration, LLM routing, tool integration and observability. Architect for enterprise security, scalability and multi-tenancy; standardize the use of agent frameworks and protocols, and evaluate new LLM providers, inference optimizations and agentic technologies.
  • Build, lead and mentor a team of 8–15 backend, infrastructure and AI/ML platform engineers. Establish practices for code review, testing, CI/CD and documentation, and collaborate with product, data science and business stakeholders.
  • Own reliability, availability and performance SLAs, including alerting, incident response and capacity planning. Deliver iterative capabilities, manage dependencies across consuming teams, and improve developer experience through APIs, SDKs, documentation and self-service tools.
  • Lead architectural and build-versus-buy decisions, and ensure the platform meets security, compliance and audit requirements.

Required qualifications

  • 10+ years in software engineering and 5+ years in engineering leadership or management, including managing managers or large teams. Experience building and operating production API, data or ML platforms; shipping platform products for multiple teams; and leading organization-level technical strategy.
  • Experience with multi-agent frameworks such as LangGraph, CrewAI or AutoGen; MCP or comparable tool-integration standards; LLM APIs, agent frameworks and prompt engineering. Strong distributed-systems design, production cloud-native infrastructure using Kubernetes, Docker and Terraform, and Python backend development with FastAPI and asynchronous patterns.

Preferred qualifications include financial-services or regulated-industry experience; SSE, WebSocket or AG-UI; data mesh or data-platform architectures using GraphQL, dbt or data catalogs; Module Federation or micro-frontends; AI/ML open-source contributions or community leadership; and experience scaling a platform from inception through growth.
