Machine Learning Engineer

Octave-X · Chicago, United States

About this role

Octave-X seeks a Machine Learning Engineer to develop the AI models and infrastructure behind Tenzin, its formally verified AI model, and the broader platform. The role spans research prototyping, architecture design, distributed training, evaluation, and production deployment for enterprise workloads in regulated and high-trust environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize large-scale distributed training and inference pipelines for Tenzin and future models.
  • Build evaluation suites measuring safety, reliability, alignment, and model quality across deployment scenarios.
  • Work with research, product, and infrastructure teams to turn model prototypes into production-grade services.
  • Develop real-time observability for model behavior, performance regressions, and data drift; build secure, testable, maintainable ML infrastructure using modern frameworks and cloud-native tooling.
  • Contribute to formal verification layers intended to provide mathematical guarantees over model outputs.

Required qualifications

  • At least 3 years of hands-on machine learning engineering experience shipping models to production.
  • Strong Python proficiency and deep experience with PyTorch, JAX, or an equivalent modern ML framework.
  • Experience with multi-GPU or multi-node distributed training, model parallelism, and inference optimization; practical knowledge of transformer architectures, attention mechanisms, and large language model evaluation.
  • Understanding of experiment tracking, model versioning, CI/CD for ML, and monitoring. Strong communication skills and ownership of problems end to end.

Preferred qualifications include experience with formal methods, verification systems, type theory, or proof assistants such as Lean, Coq, or Agda; work in healthcare, financial services, or the public sector; GPU performance profiling, kernel optimization, or compute cost reduction; and familiarity with Homotopy Type Theory or dependent type systems.

This is a full-time position in Chicago, IL, or remote within the US. Compensation is $120,000 plus benefits.
