About this role
Tabs seeks a Research Engineer, AI/ML to build AI products for finance and accounting teams. Its revenue platform uses customer and contract context, accounting logic, agents, and applications to execute workflows with controls, auditability, and human oversight. The role owns problems from initial exploration through production and works on-site in New York City five days a week.
Responsibilities
- Turn messy financial data and ambiguous problems into working AI products, beginning with simple baselines and adding complexity when justified.
- Build evaluations tied to real user outcomes. Use error analysis, ablations, and production feedback to improve systems.
- Balance model quality, cost, latency, determinism, reliability, and maintainability. Partner with product and engineering to deliver features that reduce manual work for finance teams.
- Ship, learn from usage, iterate, communicate assumptions and tradeoffs clearly, and contribute where the small team needs help.
Qualifications
- Strong statistical and machine learning fundamentals, including judgment about when to use classical ML, LLMs, agents, or other approaches. Experience shipping ML or AI systems end-to-end, from data and evaluation through production, and working with noisy data, weak labels, incomplete specifications, and imperfect supervision.
- Experience across several of classical ML, embeddings, retrieval, reranking, similarity search, model evaluation, LLM applications, and agentic systems. Strong Python skills and ability to contribute to production software. TypeScript or modern web application experience is a plus.
- Candidates typically bring a relevant quantitative bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of relevant industry or applied research experience; a relevant master’s degree and 1+ year; a relevant PhD, with three years of substantive doctoral research considered equivalent experience; or equivalent practical experience demonstrated through shipped systems, independent research, open-source work, or another nontraditional path. Compensation and benefits: The posted salary range is $170K–$235K, with equity offered.
