AI Research Engineer

Meta is hiring an AI Research Engineer to work on frontier AI with direct product applications across Facebook and other Meta products. The role combines research on multimodal foundation models with engineering systems that bring generative AI experiences to users at scale.

Responsibilities

• Train next-generation multimodal foundation models, advancing their understanding, generation, reasoning and grounding capabilities for downstream products.
• Source and curate high-quality pre-, mid- and post-training data, and scale and optimize data pipelines for multimodal large language models.
• Lead and collaborate on research that advances multimodal reasoning and generation, prioritizing work applicable to product development.
• Depending on team needs and strengths, build post-training, evaluation and serving systems; develop an agentic platform; or improve capacity and cost through fine-tuning and other techniques. Potential work includes supervised fine-tuning, RLHF, synthetic data, automated judges, benchmarks, human-AI calibration, RAG, memory, multimodal generation and multi-agent orchestration. The team owns work from training data through production behavior and measurement.

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience as a formal technical lead, leading major initiatives with cross-functional impact and/or influencing strategy across multiple teams.
• Strong engineering background and experience in AI/ML environments; ability to manage data pipelines and versioning. A PhD in machine learning is not required.

The listed locations are Bellevue, Washington, and Menlo Park, California. The stated U.S. compensation is $183,997–$257,000 per year, plus bonus, equity and benefits; individual compensation depends on skills, qualifications, experience and location.
