About this role
American Express seeks an AI Engineer III to help build production agentic AI systems using financial data for customer-facing experiences, decision support and autonomous workflows. This is a hands-on engineering role, not a research-only position. The engineer will work with experienced engineers, product managers and designers, with mentorship and opportunities to deepen expertise in LLMs and production AI.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement and ship LLM-powered product features and agentic workflows that reason over context, call tools and perform actions, with guidance from senior engineers.
- Implement and maintain retrieval-augmented generation pipelines over financial data, emphasizing correctness and safety.
- Contribute to shared LLM services, orchestration components, and evaluation and monitoring tools. Write production code, participate in system design, and help monitor, debug and improve systems after launch.
- Work with product and design partners to turn customer needs into technical solutions while meeting financial-services standards for reliability, security, explainability, compliance and auditability.
Qualifications
- At least 4 years of professional software engineering experience and some hands-on experience with AI-powered features, LLM applications or applied ML systems, whether professional or project-based.
- Strong fundamentals in at least one backend language—Python, Go or TypeScript—plus familiarity with APIs, basic cloud concepts and modern development practices. The role calls for interest in agentic AI and AI-assisted development, a willingness to learn and take feedback, cross-functional collaboration and a customer-focused approach. The posting lists a bachelor's degree level.
Preferred
Exposure to LLM tooling, prompt engineering, RAG or agent frameworks; internship or early-career experience in fintech or another regulated environment; and contributions to AI or developer-tooling open-source projects, hackathons or side projects.
The technical environment includes AWS and/or GCP, Kubernetes, REST, gRPC, Kafka-based event-driven systems, vector storage and structured-data handling. The position is hybrid in Phoenix or New York. US work eligibility is required; American Express will not pursue visa sponsorship. The stated salary range is $103750–$174750 annually, plus bonus and benefits.
