Sr. Engineer, AI Architect

About this role

Lenovo seeks a Sr. Engineer, AI Architect to lead the technical direction, architecture and scalability of its next-generation AI platform. The role spans foundational models through application-level agents and supports Lenovo’s Hybrid AI vision. The position is full-time, with locations listed in Morrisville, North Carolina, and San Jose, California.

Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain scalable, reliable and performant AI system architecture. Guide engineering teams through implementation, provide mentorship, and document system architecture and components.
  • Architect and oversee model training and fine-tuning, including supervised fine-tuning, LoRA and prompt tuning. Apply expertise in LLMs and multimodal vision, speech and text models.
  • Lead intelligent-agent design, including intent understanding, task decomposition, planning and tool calling using approaches such as Model Context Protocol. Design knowledge systems using vector databases, reranking and knowledge graphs; select output-sampling strategies for relevant, coherent responses.
  • Follow AI research, identify applications for products and services, and collaborate with product management, data science and engineering teams to define requirements and deliver solutions.

Required qualifications

An advanced degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence or a related field; a Ph.D. is preferred. Candidates need 12+ years designing and implementing AI systems; understanding of machine learning and deep learning; extensive LLM and Transformer experience; hands-on multimodal-model experience; Python proficiency and experience with frameworks such as PyTorch. The role also requires knowledge of vector databases, embedding models, knowledge graphs and knowledge-base management, plus familiarity with prompt engineering and optimization.

Preferred qualifications

Production AI deployment and MLOps experience, open-source AI contributions, publications in leading AI venues, and familiarity with Jira and Confluence. Strong communication, interpersonal and presentation skills are sought, including the ability to produce clear technical descriptions, class and sequence diagrams, and protocol definitions.

The anticipated annual compensation range is 184,700–283,245 USD. Final compensation depends on experience, skills and business considerations; bonuses and/or commissions may also be considered.
