01

Understand the role

What matters most

  • Shape enterprise pursuits

The role partners with sales and account teams to qualify opportunities, leads executive discovery and AI strategy discussions, and turns business challenges into solution roadmaps for strategic and large, multi-million-dollar pursuits.

  • Architect modern data platforms

CGI calls for enterprise designs spanning AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, Snowflake, Databricks, lakes or lakehouses, warehousing, ETL/ELT, streaming, governance and master data management.

  • Make AI designs usable at enterprise scale

The director designs solutions involving generative and agentic AI, RAG, LLMs, assistants, machine learning and automation, while evaluating emerging technology and developing reusable accelerators and reference architectures.

  • Connect executive advice to delivery

The role presents recommendations to business and technology leaders, supports proposals and RFP responses, and works with delivery teams to transition solutions into implementation.

  • Raise architecture practice standards

CGI expects the director to mentor architects and engineers and promote architecture standards, governance and engineering best practices.

Likely challenges to think through

  • Commit to a solution before every detail is known

Likely preparation challenge, not a stated CGI problem: pre-sales pursuits require a credible roadmap while discovery may still be incomplete. Prepare an example of how to surface assumptions, qualify an opportunity and distinguish a proposed architecture from decisions needing validation.

  • Balance AI ambition with enterprise controls

Likely preparation challenge: selecting among RAG, agentic AI and other approaches while accounting for the posting’s security, governance and enterprise-architecture requirements. Prepare to explain when a simpler approach is preferable and how its data dependencies would affect the design.

  • Balance tailored proposals with implementable standards

Likely preparation challenge: a client-specific proposal must still be feasible for delivery teams and consistent with reusable reference architectures. Prepare an example showing how you documented trade-offs, preserved room for client needs and made a handoff actionable.

Practice your answers

Technical practice

How would you turn an executive AI strategy workshop into a solution roadmap?

What to coverSuggested answer focus: Describe how you would clarify business outcomes, data constraints and decision-makers before proposing an architecture. Explain how you would sequence implementation, identify dependencies and test whether the opportunity is sufficiently defined to pursue.

How would you choose among AWS, Azure and Google Cloud for an enterprise data solution?

What to coverSuggested answer focus: Compare the client's existing environment, integration needs, security requirements, operating model and cost considerations. Explain how you would make a recommendation without assuming one cloud is always best.

When would you recommend a data warehouse, lake or lakehouse?

What to coverSuggested answer focus: Compare analytics needs, data types, governance, performance and operational complexity. Discuss where Snowflake or Databricks could fit, while distinguishing platform selection from the underlying architecture decision.

How would you design data integration across batch and streaming sources?

What to coverSuggested answer focus: Walk through ETL versus ELT choices, latency needs, data quality and scalability. Explain how you would diagnose a pipeline that misses freshness or reliability targets and decide whether a streaming approach is warranted.

How would you build governance and master data management into a data-platform design?

What to coverSuggested answer focus: Address ownership, consistent definitions, access controls and security across integrated sources. Explain the trade-off between centralized standards and teams' ability to deliver data products efficiently.

How would you architect a retrieval-augmented generation solution for enterprise use?

What to coverSuggested answer focus: Cover source preparation, retrieval, permissions, answer grounding and evaluation of answer quality. Explain when RAG is preferable to relying on an LLM alone and what limitations you would surface to stakeholders.

When would agentic AI be preferable to an AI assistant or conventional automation?

What to coverSuggested answer focus: Compare the required autonomy, workflow complexity and predictability of each approach. Discuss controls, human oversight and ways to evaluate whether added autonomy delivers enough value to justify its risks.

How would you evaluate an emerging AI technology for a client solution?

What to coverSuggested answer focus: Define a business-relevant test of capability, integration, security, cost and operational fit. Explain what evidence would justify adoption, further experimentation or rejection rather than selecting a technology for novelty.

What would make an AI or data reference architecture reusable?

What to coverSuggested answer focus: Describe which patterns, interfaces and governance decisions should be standardized and which must remain client-specific. Explain how you would validate an accelerator against real solution needs and keep it maintainable.

How would you carry an architecture from a large pursuit into delivery?

What to coverSuggested answer focus: Explain how you would document assumptions, scope boundaries, dependencies and technical risks for a proposal or RFP response. Describe how you would review those decisions with delivery leaders so the implementation roadmap remains credible.

Behavioural practice

Tell me about a time you led discovery with senior stakeholders who had different goals.

What to coverSuggested preparation: Use a real situation to explain the questions you asked, how you reconciled priorities and what decision resulted. Keep the focus on your actions and a concrete outcome rather than a generic workshop method.

Describe a time you challenged a proposed solution during a strategic pursuit.

What to coverSuggested preparation: Set out the commercial or technical tension, how you worked with sales and delivery colleagues, and the recommendation you made. State the result and any trade-off the group accepted.

Tell me about a time you presented a complex architecture recommendation to business leaders.

What to coverSuggested preparation: Explain the audience's decision, how you translated technical choices into business implications and how you handled objections. Give the outcome, including what changed after the presentation.

Describe a time you handed a solution design to a delivery team and encountered a gap.

What to coverSuggested preparation: Identify the gap, your role in resolving it and how you updated assumptions or plans. Explain the result for implementation without claiming a flawless handoff.

Tell me about a time you mentored architects or engineers on an architecture standard.

What to coverSuggested preparation: Describe the situation, the guidance or feedback you gave, and how you balanced consistency with practical delivery needs. Include an observable result or lesson learned.
