About this role
Vertex seeks a Senior Principal AI Engineer for its Agentic AI Platform team in Boston, MA. The hybrid role builds shared, production-grade capabilities that help enterprise teams develop and deploy AI-enabled products and intelligent workflows. Its primary focus is a build/bring-your-own-agents capability governed by common platform standards and controls.
Responsibilities
- Architect frameworks, SDKs, templates, interfaces and guardrails so teams can create, customize, integrate and operate their own agents. Provide self-service onboarding, CLIs, sandboxes, reference implementations and documentation.
- Develop services for foundation-model and enterprise-tool integration, prompt and workflow orchestration, tool use, memory patterns and agentic task coordination. Support agent registration, configuration, testing, deployment, versioning, monitoring and retirement.
- Build evaluation and benchmarking frameworks and observability capabilities, including tracing, logging and alerting. Improve production scalability, latency, reliability, performance and cost efficiency.
- Turn prototypes into maintainable services; define APIs, engineering standards, governance controls and safeguards for agent behavior. Partner with product, data, engineering, security and architecture teams; mentor engineers and assess emerging AI tools and architectures.
Required qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Machine Learning, Data Engineering or a related technical field; significant industry experience in software engineering, ML engineering or AI platform development, including senior- or principal-level technical work; and a record of delivering production-scale AI or ML platforms. Candidates need experience with distributed systems, APIs, microservices, cloud-native applications and enterprise AI solutions, plus strong testing, CI/CD, version-control, security and communication practices. The role requires technical leadership and experience establishing standards for responsible use of AI coding assistants and software engineering agents. No specific number of years is stated.
Preferred qualifications
An advanced related degree; experience with enterprise developer platforms, extensible tooling and self-service developer experiences; familiarity with model gateways, retrieval-augmented generation, evaluation frameworks, vector databases and knowledge retrieval; and experience with AI governance or regulated industries such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare or life sciences.
