About this role
Manulife seeks a Senior Data Scientist for its Long Term Care Fraud, Waste & Abuse Advanced Analytics team. The role combines statistical modeling, machine learning and generative AI to turn fraud and risk problems into scalable, production-ready solutions that protect policyholders, support program integrity and improve operational efficiency. The posting lists Boston, Massachusetts, and Toronto, Ontario, as locations; the arrangement is hybrid and full-time.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end development of fraud detection and risk analytics models, including probabilistic, anomaly-detection and ensemble approaches. Analyze large, complex datasets to identify emerging patterns and root causes.
- Develop, fine-tune, evaluate and deploy generative AI models, including GPT models. Build and monitor modular retrieval-augmented generation systems using advanced retrieval methods, and apply LLMs to extract structured information from documents containing multi-column text, tables and images.
- Manage cloud-based solutions for scalability, security and performance; keep current with prompt engineering, agentic frameworks and cloud technologies. Work with data and ML engineers to integrate solutions into existing workflows, translate business requirements, communicate findings to technical and nontechnical partners, and review other data scientists’ models and code.
Required qualifications
A master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, Physics or a related quantitative field; at least 5 years of hands-on industry experience developing probabilistic models, analytics and machine-learning algorithms and applying models in practice, with a strong focus on machine learning, generative AI and RAG applications. Python proficiency and experience with ML frameworks and tools such as PyTorch, scikit-learn, Hugging Face, SQL, Neo4j/Cypher and Cosmos DB are required.
Preferred qualifications
Knowledge of software engineering practices across coding standards, reviews, source control, builds, testing and operations; strong collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
The stated Boston salary range is $107,450–$199,550 USD; employees may also be eligible for performance-based incentive compensation. Eligible employees have access to health and other insurance, retirement plans, wellness support and paid time off. Salary for other locations is available from the employer.
