Research Fellow/Research Associate (Developing AI-enabled software for nature-positive business transformation in ASEAN)

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University seeks a Research Fellow or Research Associate to develop AI and AI-enabled software for nature-positive business transformation in ASEAN. The research will support a new venture helping Southeast Asian businesses transition toward sustainability. The researcher will help build a new line of activity and develop a longer-term research vision at the intersection of AI and sustainability, with opportunities to pursue follow-on funding and research leadership.

Responsibilities

• Review developments in large language models, agents and world models for sustainability applications.
• Design AI tools using curated datasets on Southeast Asian sustainability reporting; implement, test and benchmark them with open-source frameworks.
• Work with sustainability researchers, data scientists and industry partners to ensure models are relevant and usable.
• Develop user-facing prototypes or APIs for reporting, analysis and decision support. Contribute to academic publications, open-source releases and capacity-building activities.

Requirements

• MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence or a related field.
• Proven experience developing large or small language models, or AI-enabled software; strong Python programming skills and familiarity with PyTorch, TensorFlow or Hugging Face Transformers.
• Experience with data engineering, including preprocessing, annotation or pipelines; strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to reproducibility and open-source best practices.
• Experience or demonstrated interest in applied NLP in contexts such as finance, ESG, corporate sustainability or environmental data. The role calls for a motivated, entrepreneurial researcher interested in AI and sustainability.

Location: NTU Main Campus, Singapore. Employment is full-time.
