01

Understand the role

What matters most

  • Define measurable AI quality

The role translates product requirements, user needs and risks into success criteria that can guide release decisions. For preparation, outline how you would turn a product goal into measurable criteria and explain what each measure would miss.

  • Make grading trustworthy

The posting calls for selecting grading methods, calibrating automated graders against human judgment, and reviewing transcripts and failures. Prepare to explain how you would check grader agreement and investigate disagreements.

  • Set the evaluation platform roadmap

The PM owns platform vision and requirements with engineering and data teams, prioritizing capabilities such as dataset management, model and prompt comparisons, multi-turn evaluation, trace review and release integration. Prepare a rationale for sequencing capabilities rather than treating every feature as equally urgent.

  • Keep evaluations useful as products change

The role maintains balanced evaluation suites, converts production issues into regression tests, and improves coverage and accuracy. Prepare to describe how a newly observed failure could become a repeatable test without distorting the overall suite.

  • Turn results into shared decisions

The posting calls for evaluation governance, contributions from teams and experts, and links to monitoring, A/B tests, user feedback and business KPIs. Prepare to explain how you would present conflicting evidence clearly to product, technical and business partners.

Likely challenges to think through

  • Speed versus confidence in grading

Possible difficulty, not a confirmed Rakuten problem: automated grading can scale faster than human review but may diverge from human judgment on nuanced failures. Prepare a calibration approach that identifies when human review is needed and how uncertainty would affect a release recommendation.

  • Platform breadth versus evaluation depth

Possible difficulty: a roadmap spanning datasets, comparisons, multi-turn tests, traces and dashboards could spread effort thin while leaving important risks under-tested. Prepare a prioritization framework grounded in product risk, decision value and engineering effort.

  • Offline scores versus production outcomes

Possible difficulty: an improved evaluation score may not align with monitoring, experiments, feedback or business KPIs. Prepare to explain how you would investigate a mismatch before changing criteria or recommending a release.

How would you choose grading methods and calibrate an automated grader against human judgment?

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Compare what automated and human grading can assess reliably, then describe how you would review disagreements and revise the grading approach. Address consistency without treating either method as infallible.

How would you build and maintain a balanced evaluation suite?

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Discuss dataset selection, coverage of important user needs and risks, and how you would detect gaps or misleading results. Explain how you would improve coverage and accuracy as the product changes.

How would you turn a production failure into a useful regression test?

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Walk through reviewing the relevant transcript or trace, identifying the failure condition, and adding a repeatable test. Explain how you would check that the test catches the issue without overfitting to one example.

How would you compare model and prompt versions in a multi-turn evaluation?

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Explain how version records and traces would make comparisons interpretable across turns. Address the trade-off between broad comparisons and detailed review of consequential failures.

How would you prioritize an evaluation platform roadmap?

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Compare the value and dependencies of dataset management, grading, trace review, dashboards and release integration. Explain how you would define requirements with engineering and data teams rather than assuming every capability should be built at once.

What data-pipeline requirements would you define for evaluations at large-dataset scale?

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Discuss repeatable dataset handling, links between results and model or prompt versions, and data quality checks. Explain which requirements enable reliable analysis and which implementation decisions you would work through with engineering and data teams.

How would you use evaluation results to support a release decision?

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Describe how you would compare versions, inspect failures and regressions, and communicate uncertainty alongside aggregate results. Explain what evidence would warrant further review rather than a confident recommendation.

How would you reconcile evaluation results with production monitoring, A/B tests, user feedback and business KPIs?

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Explain what each source can reveal and why their signals might disagree. Describe how you would investigate a discrepancy before changing priorities or drawing a release conclusion.

How would you govern contributions to evaluations from teams and domain experts?

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Outline how contributors could propose criteria or cases while keeping evaluation results comparable and trustworthy. Discuss review, ownership and communicating changes to the teams using the results.

Behavioural practice

Tell me about a time you aligned product, engineering and data stakeholders on a quality measure.

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Use a real situation to explain the competing views, the actions you took to reach a shared definition, and the result. Clarify your own contribution without implying that agreement came easily.

Describe a time you had to prioritize platform work amid competing requests.

What to coverPreparation suggestion: State the situation and constraints, how you weighed impact against effort or dependencies, and what you decided. Close with the observed result and anything you changed afterward.

Tell me about a time you presented complex analytical results to a decision-making audience.

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Explain the situation, how you communicated the key findings and uncertainty, and the resulting decision or discussion. Focus on what you did to make the evidence understandable.

Describe a time you helped different teams adopt a shared quality or evaluation process.

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Identify the starting situation, the actions you took to enable contributions and handle objections, and the outcome. Distinguish evidence of adoption from simply launching a process.

Tell me about a time a production issue changed how your team assessed quality.

What to coverPreparation suggestion: Describe the issue and your role, the actions taken to investigate it and prevent recurrence, and the result. If relevant, explain how the experience changed subsequent evaluation or release decisions.
