Understand the role

What matters most

  • Model Development and Lifecycle Management

The core responsibility is to develop, implement, and maintain machine learning models for credit risk across diverse portfolios including Consumer, Small Business, and Wholesale. This requires not only building predictive models but also ensuring their ongoing performance through rigorous back-testing, monitoring, and reporting to detect weaknesses early.

  • Regulatory Compliance and Model Governance

The role requires strict adherence to governance frameworks. You must collaborate effectively with independent model validators to address findings and engage directly with auditors and regulators to ensure all credit risk models meet institutional and external compliance standards.

  • Stakeholder Engagement and Business Integration

You will act as a bridge between technical model outputs and business strategy. This involves translating complex analytical solutions into actionable insights for credit decisioning, allowance, and capital assessment, requiring the ability to communicate effectively with senior management.

Likely challenges to think through

  • Balancing Innovation with Strict Governance

Integrating advanced machine learning techniques into a highly regulated banking environment often creates tension between model complexity and the need for interpretability and compliance. Prepare by demonstrating how you have successfully navigated model validation processes while maintaining the integrity of sophisticated predictive models.

  • Managing Diverse Portfolio Requirements

The role spans Consumer, Small Business, and Wholesale segments, each with distinct risk profiles and data characteristics. You may face difficulty in standardizing model approaches across these segments; prepare by highlighting your experience in adapting methodologies to suit different credit risk contexts.

  • Technical Complexity in Big Data Environments

Working with large-scale datasets using Hadoop, Hive, Trino, and Spark requires significant technical overhead. The challenge lies in maintaining model performance and scalability within these systems; be prepared to discuss how you optimize data pipelines and model deployment in a DevOps-driven environment.

Practice your answers

Technical practice

Machine Learning for Credit Risk

What to coverDiscuss the trade-offs between using traditional scorecard models versus advanced machine learning models in a regulated banking environment. Address how you ensure model interpretability and transparency, which are critical for regulatory compliance and internal governance.

Model Back-testing and Performance Monitoring

What to coverExplain your approach to back-testing credit risk models. Describe the specific metrics you use to detect model degradation or drift and how you would report these findings to stakeholders to ensure early detection of weaknesses.

Big Data Technologies in Risk Analytics

What to coverDescribe your experience using big data tools like Hadoop, Hive, Trino, or Spark to process large datasets for credit risk modelling. Focus on how you optimize query performance and handle data quality issues when working with massive, multi-segment portfolios.

IFRS 9 and Expected Credit Loss (ECL) Modelling

What to coverDiscuss the challenges of developing IFRS 9 based Expected Credit Loss models. Explain how you incorporate forward-looking macroeconomic variables into your predictive models to estimate credit losses accurately.

Model Governance and Validation

What to coverHow do you prepare for and collaborate with independent model validators? Describe your process for documenting model development, addressing validation findings, and ensuring compliance with internal governance frameworks.

DevOps for Data Science

What to coverExplain how you integrate DevOps tools like Git, Jenkins, and Jira into your model development lifecycle. Focus on how these tools facilitate version control, automated testing, and the deployment of production-ready credit risk models.

Credit Stress Testing Methodologies

What to coverDescribe your experience with credit stress testing models. Explain how you design scenarios to assess the impact on capital adequacy and how you ensure these models remain robust under extreme economic conditions.

Feature Engineering for Credit Scoring

What to coverWhen building models for Consumer or Wholesale portfolios, how do you approach feature engineering? Discuss how you handle missing data, outliers, and categorical variables to improve the predictive power of your credit risk models.

Behavioural practice

Communicating Technical Findings to Senior Management
