01
Understand the role
What matters most
End-to-End AI Application Development
The role requires taking AI solutions from initial prototype to production. You must demonstrate the ability to build functional features using LLMs, APIs, and backend services while ensuring they are ready for real-world deployment.
Technical Proficiency in Generative AI Frameworks
A core priority is the implementation of RAG, embeddings, and vector search. You must be comfortable integrating LLMs via services like OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, or Amazon Bedrock and utilizing tool calling to enhance application capabilities.
Software Engineering Fundamentals
Beyond AI-specific tasks, you must maintain strong software engineering practices. This includes writing clean code in Python or TypeScript, managing version control with Git, and supporting the monitoring and optimization of production systems.
Likely challenges to think through
Balancing Innovation with Production Reliability
As an entry-level engineer, you will face the challenge of moving fast with experimental AI prototypes while maintaining the high reliability and safety standards required for production applications. Prepare by studying testing methodologies for non-deterministic AI outputs.
Managing AI Quality and Safety
Testing and evaluating AI quality is explicitly mentioned as a responsibility. The difficulty lies in the inherent unpredictability of LLMs. Prepare by researching evaluation frameworks for RAG pipelines and strategies for mitigating hallucinations or security vulnerabilities in AI-enabled applications.
03
Practice your answers
Technical practice
Implementing RAG Architectures
What to coverExplain the components of a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline. Discuss how you would handle document chunking, embedding generation, and vector database selection to ensure relevant context retrieval for an LLM.
LLM Integration and API Management
What to coverDescribe the process of integrating an LLM via APIs like OpenAI or Amazon Bedrock. Address how you manage API keys securely, handle rate limits, and implement error handling for production-grade applications.
Evaluating AI Quality and Safety
What to coverHow do you measure the performance and reliability of an LLM-based application? Suggest metrics or testing strategies to detect hallucinations, bias, or prompt injection vulnerabilities.
Python and Backend API Development
What to coverDiscuss your approach to building scalable backend services using Python. Explain how you structure your code for maintainability and how you design RESTful APIs to serve AI-driven features.
Vector Search and Embeddings
What to coverExplain the role of embeddings in AI applications. Describe how you would perform a similarity search in a vector database to retrieve contextually relevant information for a user query.
Deployment and Monitoring of AI Models
What to coverWhat are the key considerations when moving an AI prototype to a production environment? Suggest tools or strategies for monitoring model latency, cost, and output quality over time.
Tool Calling and Agentic Workflows
What to coverDescribe how you implement tool calling to allow an LLM to interact with external systems or databases. Discuss the trade-offs between using pre-built agent frameworks versus custom-coded logic.
Frontend Integration with React or Next.js
What to coverIf you have experience with React or Next.js, explain how you would connect a frontend interface to a Python-based AI backend. Focus on state management and handling asynchronous streaming responses from LLMs.
Behavioural practice
Handling Technical Ambiguity in Projects
What to coverDescribe a time during an internship or university project where you faced an ambiguous technical requirement. Explain how you researched the problem, made a decision, and communicated your progress to stakeholders.
Learning New AI Technologies
What to coverThe field of generative AI evolves rapidly. Provide an example of a new tool or framework you recently learned independently and how you applied it to a personal or academic project.
Collaborating in a Development Team
What to coverShare an experience where you had to work with others using Git for version control. How did you handle merge conflicts or coordinate code reviews to ensure the quality of the final output?
Prioritizing Tasks Under Pressure
What to coverDescribe a situation where you had to balance multiple project tasks or deadlines. Explain your method for prioritizing work and ensuring that critical features were completed on time.
02
Sharpen your knowledge
Topics to prepare
Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) Architecture
Understand the end-to-end flow of RAG, including document chunking, embedding generation, vector database storage, and retrieval strategies. Exercise: Design a system architecture diagram for a document-based Q&A bot, detailing how you would handle context window limits and retrieval accuracy.
AI Quality and Safety Evaluation
Learn methodologies for testing LLM outputs, including hallucination detection, prompt injection defense, and reliability metrics. Exercise: Create a test suite for a simple chatbot that evaluates responses based on factual accuracy and adherence to a predefined system prompt.
LLM Integration Patterns
Study the differences between using managed services like OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, and Amazon Bedrock. Exercise: Compare the API documentation for these three providers and draft a modular Python wrapper that allows switching between them with minimal code changes.
Skills to revise
Python Backend Development for AI
Develop robust backend services that interface with LLM APIs. Exercise: Build a RESTful API using FastAPI that accepts user input, sends it to an LLM provider, and returns a structured JSON response, ensuring proper error handling for API timeouts.
Vector Search Implementation
Gain hands-on experience with vector databases to perform semantic searches. Exercise: Use a library like ChromaDB or FAISS to index a small set of text documents and implement a function that retrieves the most relevant context for a given user query.
Version Control with Git
Master collaborative software development workflows. Exercise: Create a repository for an AI project, implement a branching strategy for feature development, and practice resolving merge conflicts to simulate a production team environment.
04
Your preparation checklist
Prepare a technical project walkthrough
Select a personal or academic project that demonstrates your ability to integrate an LLM API. Prepare to explain your architecture, specifically how you handled data retrieval, embeddings, or vector search, and how you ensured the reliability of the AI output.
Demonstrate Python and backend proficiency
Review your code samples to ensure they follow clean software engineering principles. Be ready to discuss how you have used Python or TypeScript to build RESTful APIs and how you manage version control using Git in a collaborative environment.
Articulate your RAG implementation experience
Prepare a clear explanation of a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline you have built or studied. Focus on the workflow from document ingestion and embedding generation to vector database querying and final prompt construction.
Research cloud and frontend integration
Familiarize yourself with the basics of cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, particularly services related to hosting AI models. If you have experience with React or Next.js, prepare a brief example of how you have connected a frontend interface to a backend AI service.
Formulate questions about the AI development lifecycle
