01
Understand the role
What matters most
AI-Driven Search Optimization
The core objective is to bridge materials chemistry expertise with Generative AI to improve search and retrieval on the Reaxys platform. You must design, train, and validate AI search behaviors to ensure they meet the complex needs of materials science researchers.
Content Enrichment and Normalization
You are responsible for defining guidelines for manual and AI-assisted automated extraction of materials chemistry data. This requires establishing rigorous normalization standards to ensure data consistency across diverse domains like polymers, batteries, and semiconductors.
Quality Assurance and Evaluation
You must design high-quality evaluation datasets to assess the accuracy and reliability of AI-extracted content. This involves performing ongoing quality assurance and data analysis to support content strategy and platform improvements.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Success depends on effectively communicating complex scientific requirements to Data Science and Technology partners. You must act as the subject-matter expert to ensure technical solutions align with the practical research needs of the materials science community.
Likely challenges to think through
Bridging Scientific Complexity with AI Logic
Materials chemistry data is highly structured and nuanced. A significant challenge is translating these scientific structures into formats that Generative AI can process accurately. Prepare by demonstrating how you have previously structured scientific data for computational use or database integration.
Defining Quality in Automated Extraction
Automated extraction often introduces errors or hallucinations. You will face the difficulty of creating robust test sets that catch these errors. Prepare by discussing your methodology for designing gold-standard datasets and your approach to validating AI outputs against ground-truth scientific literature.
Balancing Domain Expertise with Technical Constraints
You may encounter trade-offs where the ideal scientific representation of data conflicts with current AI model capabilities. Prepare to explain how you prioritize data elements for extraction and how you negotiate technical limitations with engineering teams to maintain scientific integrity.

02
Sharpen your knowledge
Topics to prepare
Generative AI Search Architectures
Review how Large Language Models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) are applied to scientific databases. Exercise: Research the challenges of hallucination in technical domains and how ground-truth datasets mitigate these risks, as this is central to the role's focus on validating AI-driven search.
Materials Chemistry Data Structures
Understand how complex materials data (polymers, semiconductors, batteries) is represented in taxonomies and ontologies. Exercise: Map out the key data elements required for a battery material (e.g., electrochemical properties, structural composition) and consider how these would be normalized for a searchable database.
Skills to revise
Evaluation Dataset Design
Develop the ability to create high-quality test sets for AI validation. Exercise: Create a small, annotated dataset of 10-20 scientific abstracts related to catalysts, identifying specific entities and relationships that an AI model should extract correctly to demonstrate your proficiency in quality assurance.
Content Normalization and Extraction
Practice defining guidelines for structured data extraction from unstructured scientific text. Exercise: Draft a set of normalization rules for a specific material class, such as polymers, ensuring that terminology and units are consistent for database ingestion.
Cross-functional Technical Communication
Prepare to explain complex chemistry concepts to data science and technology partners. Exercise: Practice summarizing a recent materials science research paper into a set of clear, actionable requirements that a non-chemist software developer could use to build a search filter.
04
Your preparation checklist
Map Materials Chemistry Expertise to Data Structures
Prepare a summary of how you have organized complex materials data (e.g., polymer properties, battery performance metrics) in past research. Be ready to explain how you would translate this domain knowledge into structured taxonomies or database schemas suitable for AI-driven retrieval.
Develop an Evaluation Framework for AI Search
Create a mock methodology for validating AI-extracted content. Define specific metrics you would use to assess the accuracy and relevance of data extracted from scientific literature, focusing on how you would build a 'gold standard' test set for training models.
Prepare Examples of Cross-Functional Collaboration
Draft two concrete examples of times you worked with non-scientists (such as software engineers or data scientists) to solve a technical problem. Focus on how you communicated complex chemical concepts to help them build or refine a technical tool.
Formulate Strategic Questions for the Team
Prepare questions regarding the current challenges in Reaxys search capabilities, such as: 'What are the primary bottlenecks in normalizing unstructured materials data?' or 'How does the team currently balance automated extraction precision with the need for manual subject-matter expert validation?'
