01

Understand the role

What matters most

  • Modernizing Infrastructure via Policy-as-Code

The role requires shifting from manual administration to an automation-first model. You must prioritize designing reusable modules using Terraform, Bicep, and CI/CD pipelines to replace one-off scripts, ensuring all infrastructure changes are version-controlled and auditable.

  • Implementing Production-Grade AI Ops

You are expected to deliver functional AI-assisted capabilities rather than pilots. This involves building anomaly detection, event correlation, and predictive models for IT operations, while ensuring these automated actions have robust security guardrails, logging, and rollback mechanisms.

  • Unifying Endpoint and Identity Architecture

A core priority is the architectural consolidation of Windows endpoints (Intune/Autopilot) and Entra ID identity workflows. You must design self-healing remediation for endpoints and automate complex Joiner/Mover/Leaver processes while maturing Zero Trust and Conditional Access enforcement.

  • Technical Leadership and Cross-Team Standardization

As a Principal engineer, you must define enterprise-wide architecture standards. You will need to mentor engineers and influence stakeholders across Network, Cloud, Security, and Service Desk teams to adopt unified telemetry and automation practices without direct reporting authority.

Likely challenges to think through

  • Balancing Innovation with Production Stability

The role involves acting as 'customer zero' for internal security products. The challenge is integrating experimental AI-assisted data security workflows into critical production infrastructure without disrupting existing operations. Prepare by discussing how you manage risk in high-stakes environments and implement 'human-in-the-loop' gates for automated remediation.

  • Navigating Complex Legacy and Modern Integration

You must unify disparate systems like Intune, CrowdStrike, Freshservice, and AWS into a single telemetry architecture. The difficulty lies in creating consistent API-driven integrations across platforms with varying maturity levels. Prepare by highlighting your experience with REST APIs, webhooks, and building abstraction layers that normalize data from heterogeneous sources.

03

Practice your answers

Technical practice

Designing Self-Healing Endpoint Remediation

What to coverExplain how you would architect a self-healing workflow for common Windows endpoint failures using Intune and CrowdStrike Falcon data. Focus on the integration logic, the use of Graph API for remediation triggers, and how you ensure these automated actions do not conflict with existing security policies.

Implementing Policy-as-Code for Infrastructure

What to coverDescribe your approach to transitioning from manual infrastructure administration to a policy-as-code model using Terraform or Bicep. Discuss how you handle state management, drift detection, and the integration of these tools into a CI/CD pipeline to ensure consistent deployments.

AI-Assisted RBAC and Entitlement Analysis

What to coverHow would you design an AI-assisted system to identify excessive privileges or stale access in Entra ID? Address how you would correlate identity data with usage patterns and what guardrails you would implement before automating any access revocation.

Unified Telemetry and Observability Architecture

What to coverDetail your strategy for building a unified telemetry view across disparate environments like AWS, M365, and on-premises network infrastructure. Explain how you would normalize this data for anomaly detection and event correlation in an AI Ops context.

Automating Joiner, Mover, and Leaver (JML) Workflows

What to coverOutline the architecture for an automated JML process involving Entra ID, M365, and an ITSM tool like Freshservice. Focus on how you ensure data integrity, handle error states, and maintain audit trails for compliance purposes.

Securing Automated Infrastructure Workflows

What to coverWhen automating high-risk infrastructure changes, what security guardrails and authentication mechanisms do you implement? Discuss your approach to secrets management, least-privilege access for service principals, and the design of human-in-the-loop approval gates.

Predictive Modeling for IT Operations

What to coverProvide an example of how you would implement a predictive model for IT operations, such as forecasting certificate expirations or patch compliance failures. Explain the data sources required and how you would translate model outputs into actionable automated workflows.

Managing Configuration Drift in M365

What to coverHow do you maintain configuration baselines for M365 services like SharePoint and Exchange Online at scale? Suggest how you would use Microsoft Graph API and PowerShell to detect and automatically remediate drift from established standards.

Behavioural practice

Influencing Technical Standards Without Direct Authority

What to coverDescribe a situation where you had to define and enforce architecture standards across teams that did not report to you. Explain how you gained buy-in from stakeholders and ensured long-term adoption of your proposed automation practices.

Handling High-Risk Automation Failures

What to coverTell me about a time an automated process you designed caused an unexpected issue in a production environment. Describe your immediate response, the steps you took to roll back the change, and how you improved the system's safety guardrails afterward.

Balancing Innovation with Operational Stability

What to coverGive an example of how you balanced the need to implement new AI-assisted capabilities with the requirement to maintain high uptime and stability for existing infrastructure. How did you prioritize your efforts and manage stakeholder expectations?

Mentoring and Elevating Engineering Teams

What to coverDescribe your approach to mentoring engineers who are transitioning from traditional administration to an automation-first mindset. Share a specific example of how you helped a team member improve their scripting or architectural design skills.
