01

Understand the role

What matters most

  • AWS-Centric ML Platform Infrastructure via IaC

The primary objective is architecting, implementing, and securing cloud-native Data Science and AI/ML infrastructure on AWS. This directly involves managing core services like SageMaker, Bedrock, and EKS using reusable Terraform modules and automation scripts in Python.

  • Automated End-to-End CI/CD and Container Orchestration

A core duty is establishing scalable CI/CD pipelines using GitLab (or tools like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps) to automate testing and release workflows. This pairs with managing containerized environments using Docker and Kubernetes (Amazon EKS) with Helm charts and rolling deployments.

  • Federated Operating Model and Standards Adoption

Because LSEG uses a federated model with core teams in London, Bucharest, and Bangalore alongside engineers embedded in business divisions, a key responsibility is driving standard DevOps culture, platform engineering best practices, and operational excellence across distributed groups.

  • Enterprise Cloud Migration, Reliability, and Governance

Supporting the migration of existing applications to AWS while maintaining strict governance is essential. The role demands implementing security best practices, comprehensive logging, monitoring, and disaster recovery strategies tailored for enterprise financial services.

Likely challenges to think through

  • Balancing Strict Financial Governance with Data Science Agility

Enterprise financial infrastructure mandates rigorous security, IAM controls, and compliance, which can create friction against data scientists needing rapid experimentation with SageMaker and Bedrock. Prepare to discuss how to design self-service guardrails, secure VPC patterns, and automated IAM policies that ensure compliance without stalling innovation.

  • Enforcing Consistency Across a Federated Architecture

With core engineering dispersed across three geographic hubs and engineers embedded in business divisions, standardizing CI/CD pipelines and Terraform modules is difficult due to varying local team habits. Prepare strategies for building modular, versioned platform tooling and driving adoption through developer advocacy and shared governance.

  • Managing High-Throughput Kubernetes and ML Workload Lifecycle

Deploying ML services and models on Amazon EKS requires balancing autoscaling, resource efficiency (such as GPU/compute provisioning), and zero-downtime rolling deployments. Prepare to demonstrate deep technical mastery in Helm chart design, cluster ingress, networking configurations, and cluster reliability under variable computational loads.

Practice your answers

Technical practice

How would you architect a secure, multi-tenant AWS foundation for Amazon SageMaker and Bedrock within an enterprise VPC?

What to coverThe response should cover VPC layout (private subnets, VPC endpoints for SageMaker, Bedrock, and S3 without traversing public internet) and strict IAM policy isolation. Candidates should address data encryption via KMS, ingress/egress filtering, and role segregation across development teams.

How do you structure reusable Terraform modules and remote state locking for enterprise cloud infrastructure across multiple teams?

What to coverThe answer should focus on designing modular Terraform patterns with version pinning, separating environment configurations, and using S3 backends paired with DynamoDB state locking. It should also discuss handling cross-stack dependencies and CI-driven automated validation via linting or drift detection.

What strategy would you implement for managing containerized ML applications on Amazon EKS using Helm, ingress controllers, and autoscaling?

What to coverCandidates should address packaging application workloads with parameterizable Helm charts and deploying an Ingress controller such as AWS Load Balancer Controller. The answer should explain autoscaling trade-offs between Horizontal Pod Autoscaling (HPA) using custom metrics and cluster node autoscaling (e.g., Karpenter or Cluster Autoscaler).

How do you design zero-downtime rolling deployments and canary releases for model inference services in Kubernetes?

What to coverThe discussion should contrast standard Kubernetes rolling updates with canary or blue/green patterns managed via ingress routing. Candidates should explain configuring readiness and liveness probes, graceful termination timeouts, and traffic shifting while monitoring endpoint error rates and latencies.

How would you build a scalable CI/CD pipeline using GitLab CI/CD for automated infrastructure and container deployment?

What to coverCandidates should outline a multi-stage pipeline covering static code analysis, Docker image builds with vulnerability scanning, automated testing, and gated Terraform plan/apply workflows. The response should also explain secure credential handling using OpenID Connect (OIDC) rather than static AWS keys.

How do you develop robust Python tooling and automation scripts to interact with AWS services at scale?

What to coverThe candidate should detail building maintainable automation scripts with boto3, incorporating retries with exponential backoff, structured logging, and robust error handling. They should address operational workflows such as automated cleanup of orphaned resources, AMI/image updates, or platform health checks.

What approach would you take to ensure high availability, logging, monitoring, and disaster recovery across AWS ML workloads?

What to coverThe response should cover multi-AZ architecture across EC2, RDS, and EKS, paired with centralized logging and metric collection via Amazon CloudWatch or external observability tools. It should define Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) for stateful data and infrastructure recovery via Terraform.

How do you migrate legacy data science or on-premise application workloads into a cloud-native AWS platform?

What to coverCandidates should discuss migration strategies (replatforming vs. containerizing onto EKS), data synchronization techniques for S3 and RDS, and dependency mapping. The answer should also evaluate validation phases, security baselining, and minimizing operational disruption during cutover.

Behavioural practice

Describe a time you led infrastructure standardization and promoted DevOps culture across distributed engineering teams.

What to coverFocus on a concrete situation in a federated or multi-team environment using the Situation, Action, Result format. Explain the specific strategy used to gain buy-in for shared CI/CD or IaC standards, how you handled pushback, and the measurable outcome in operational consistency.

Tell me about a challenging collaboration with architecture, security, or development teams to resolve conflicting priorities.

What to coverUse a clear Situation, Action, Result structure highlighting how you bridged differing technical goals (such as developer delivery speed versus rigid security or architectural compliance). Detail the communication methods, compromises negotiated, and the resulting system impact.

Can you provide an example of how you diagnosed and resolved a high-severity outage or operational failure in a cloud or Kubernetes environment?

What to coverWalk through a real incident detailing the root-cause investigation across containers, networking, or infrastructure code. Emphasize your structured troubleshooting approach, cross-functional communication during the crisis, and the preventive automation put in place afterward.

Give an example of how you managed technical debt or refactored legacy deployment scripts into reusable, maintainable automation.

What to coverOutline a scenario where unmaintainable code or fragile deployment scripts slowed delivery. Describe the technical and operational actions taken to rewrite or migrate the tooling using Python or Terraform, and quantify the improvement in deployment frequency or reliability.
