01

Understand the role

What matters most

  • Deliver customer AI use cases end to end

The role covers customer discovery, proof of value and production deployment, with tangible business outcomes as the goal. Prepare to explain how a use case moves from a business problem to a deployed solution.

  • Build reusable AI architectures

The posting calls for reusable patterns involving RAG, agents, MCP, orchestration and context engineering, plus architectures and accelerators for the practice. Prepare to discuss when a pattern is reusable and when a customer need warrants a different design.

  • Make emerging AI production-ready

The architect is expected to turn AI concepts into scalable, secure and governed solutions. Cloud platforms, APIs, CI/CD and scalable systems are named; Azure is preferred. Prepare to explain the engineering decisions behind a production design.

  • Lead across customers and delivery teams

The role leads workshops and advisory engagements with business and technical stakeholders, from engineers to CIOs, while maintaining delivery quality and consistency. Prepare to communicate the same architectural decision in terms suited to each audience.

Likely challenges to think through

  • Balancing proof-of-value speed with production needs

Potential challenge, not a reported employer problem: moving from discovery to deployment may require trading rapid validation against scalability, security and governance. Prepare a staged approach that makes those trade-offs explicit.

  • Standardising without overfitting

Potential challenge, not a reported employer problem: reusable patterns could speed delivery but may not suit every customer's context. Prepare criteria for choosing a shared pattern versus adapting the architecture.

  • Aligning different definitions of value

Potential challenge, not a reported employer problem: engineers and CIOs may need different levels of detail when evaluating the same AI use case. Prepare to connect technical choices to business outcomes while making limitations clear.

Sharpen your knowledge

Topics to prepare

  • AI use-case selection and business value

The role spans customer discovery, proof of value and production, with an emphasis on tangible business outcomes. For revision, take a hypothetical customer problem and outline the use case, success measure and criteria for progressing beyond proof of value.

  • RAG and context engineering

The posting names RAG and context engineering as areas for reusable patterns. For revision, sketch a retrieval-to-answer flow and explain how source selection, supplied context and prompt design affect answer quality.

  • Agents, MCP and orchestration

The role calls for patterns involving agents, MCP and orchestration. For revision, compare a single-step LLM response with an orchestrated agent flow, identifying where MCP could provide a standard interface and when the extra complexity is justified.

  • Secure, governed and scalable AI architecture

The posting asks the architect to turn emerging concepts into scalable, secure and governed solutions. For revision, annotate a conceptual AI architecture with access boundaries, review points and scaling considerations; treat the specific controls as preparation suggestions, not stated employer standards.

  • Cloud delivery and engineering trade-offs

Cloud platforms, APIs, CI/CD and scalable systems are stated experience areas; Azure is preferred. For revision, explain how an AI use case would move from proof of value to a cloud-hosted production design and what changes as usage grows.

Skills to revise

  • Run a customer discovery workshop

The role leads workshops with business and technical stakeholders. Practise a 20-minute mock session that elicits the business problem, available data, constraints and a measurable outcome, then summarise the proposed use case.

  • Build a small RAG proof of value

Hands-on AI work and RAG are explicitly mentioned. As a preparation exercise, build a limited question-answering flow over sample documents, then test questions that the documents do and do not support and record the results.

  • Demonstrate an API-to-deployment path

The posting calls for experience with APIs, CI/CD and scalable cloud systems. As a suggested exercise, expose a small AI workflow through an API and outline a CI/CD path, deployment checks and a scaling approach; Azure is preferred, not mandatory.

  • Present and defend a reusable architecture

The architect is expected to lead delivery technically and contribute reusable architectures. Practise a short design review of one AI pattern, stating its boundaries, quality checks and trade-offs; explain it once for engineers and once for a CIO-level audience.
