The AI Principal Engineer (IC Director) leads the design and delivery of production-grade AI systems with significant business impact. This individual contributor owns major components or domains across multiple initiatives and helps set architectural direction and engineering standards. The role requires independent delivery and collaboration with product, engineering and governance partners to build scalable, reliable solutions for a regulated environment.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop and deploy complex AI solutions, including LLM-based applications, retrieval pipelines and model-driven services.
- Guide technical direction for AI platform or product components; contribute to model selection, system integration and API design.
- Establish practices for model evaluation, testing, monitoring and operationalization. Translate product, data and business requirements into scalable solutions.
- Ensure compliance with enterprise security, privacy and responsible AI standards. Identify and mitigate technical risks, and mentor engineers.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related field; an advanced degree is preferred.
- Significant experience delivering production AI/ML systems, including model deployment and operationalization; no specific number of years is stated.
- Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python, TypeScript or Rust. Experience with AI/ML frameworks, LLM technologies and data pipelines, plus knowledge of model lifecycle management, MLOps and production reliability practices.
- Ability to lead complex technical initiatives, solve problems and work across disciplines.
Compensation and benefits: The listed annual base salary range is $192,580–$240,720 USD, with incentive opportunities depending on the role.
