About this role
The AI Field Engineer / Forward Deployed Engineer works directly with AI-native customers to turn complex challenges into production-ready AI systems. This hands-on role spans engineering, product and customer delivery, from initial discovery through deployment.
Responsibilities
- Understand customers’ technical and business needs; design and build proofs of concept, MVPs, production AI applications and integrations.
- Deploy and optimize LLM and generative AI workloads using open-source models, inference infrastructure and AI/ML platforms. Troubleshoot AI, infrastructure and deployment issues, and translate requirements into scalable solutions.
- Collaborate with customer engineers, account executives and Fireworks product and engineering teams. Explain architecture and tradeoffs to technical and executive stakeholders, contribute code and product improvements, and bring customer feedback into the product roadmap.
Required qualifications
- 3–10 years of experience in a client-facing technical or AI/ML engineering role; strong Python programming skills and AI/ML engineering fundamentals.
- Experience building and deploying AI/ML or generative AI applications, working with LLMs and/or open-source models, and developing proofs of concept toward production.
- Clear customer-facing communication, strong problem-solving in ambiguous settings, and willingness to work hands-on across engineering, delivery and product.
Relevant technical experience: Experience with some—not all—of vLLM, SGLang, TensorRT-LLM, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, GCP, AWS Bedrock, SageMaker, Azure AI Foundry, Vertex AI, LLM fine-tuning (SFT, DPO or RFT), GPU infrastructure, and model inference and optimization is highly relevant.
Location and compensation: New York, NY / San Mateo, CA / Remote, USA. Full-time. Base salary is $176K–$228K, with $220K–$285K OTE and meaningful equity. H-1B transfers and TN visas are sponsored; O-1 visas are considered case by case.
