About this role
Lead MassMutual’s AI Platform Engineering team, which builds infrastructure for AI development and deployment across the company. The director owns people leadership and day-to-day delivery, working with technical leadership and enterprise AI engineering, product, and cloud engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Hire, onboard, coach, evaluate, and support the career development of AI platform engineers; build a high-trust culture of peer learning, feedback, and documentation.
- Turn AI platform roadmap priorities into sprints and milestones, manage delivery risks and resources, and report progress and technical trade-offs to senior stakeholders.
- Participate in architecture and design reviews for agent runtime infrastructure, tool and plugin registries, memory and context management layers, and agent observability pipelines. Set standards for code quality, reliability, on-call practices, and operational maturity.
Minimum qualifications:
- 3+ years managing software, platform, or infrastructure engineers, plus 5+ years of overall software engineering experience. A track record of hiring, coaching, and retaining engineers and leading complex, multi-month platform initiatives from design through production is required.
- Working knowledge of cloud-native architecture, including Kubernetes, managed cloud services, networking, and multi-tenancy across AWS, GCP, or Azure; exposure to AI/ML infrastructure such as model serving, inference pipelines, agentic solutions, or LLM integration patterns.
- Experience establishing engineering standards; strong written communication and the ability to connect technical decisions with business priorities. A bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a similar discipline is required. Applicants must be able to work in the US without sponsorship now or in the future.
Preferred qualifications include leading an internal developer platform built from scratch, familiarity with AI safety, model evaluation and governance, open-source contributions to platform or ML infrastructure tooling, comfort with ambiguity, and an advanced degree.
The listed locations are Boston, Springfield, and New York. MassMutual describes a hybrid model with at least three days per week on campus, remote Fridays, company-wide remote weeks, and flexible remote weeks. The posted salary range is $163,900-$215,000.
