About this role
The Customer Administration Engineering (CAE) team at Coinbase is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the evolution of their flagship product, Control Center, into a modular, AI-agent-ready operations platform. This role serves as a technical anchor for the team, driving architectural decisions and leading the delivery of high-impact platform capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Architect and deliver foundational platform capabilities, including MCP tool registries, AI orchestration layers, and risk-based access automation.
- Drive the transition of Control Center into a headless, AI-agent-ready platform by designing procedure constructs, agentic guardrails, human-in-the-loop (HITL) orchestration, and evaluation frameworks.
- Partner with engineering and product leadership to define roadmaps, author technical design documents (TDDs), and lead design reviews.
- Build and maintain highly reliable, secure, distributed backend services, owning SLOs, observability, and operational readiness.
- Collaborate across cross-functional teams to drive shared platform primitives and eliminate infrastructure duplication.
Requirements
- 8+ years of hands-on software engineering experience with a track record of architecting large-scale, high-traffic distributed systems.
- Deep proficiency in backend service design, API development (gRPC, MCP, GraphQL), and microservices architectures.
- Strong experience with cloud-native infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform) and event-driven architectures (Kafka, Redis).
- Proven ability to lead ambiguous, high-impact technical initiatives from concept to production.
- Experience building or integrating with agentic AI systems, including MCP servers, LLM orchestration, RAG pipelines, and evaluation frameworks.
- Proficiency in Go (Golang) with a willingness to work in Python for AI-related tasks.
- Experience in regulated financial environments with a focus on security, compliance, and data governance.
Benefits
- Competitive base salary with equity and bonus eligibility.
- Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents.
- Additional perks include wellness stipends, mobile/internet reimbursement, learning allowances, and generous leave policies.
