Medtronic seeks a Senior Principal AI/Data Science Engineer to serve as its technical authority for Generative AI. The role leads enterprise AI strategy, architecture, governance and production deployment across healthcare products, clinical applications, digital health, engineering, quality, regulatory and operational functions. Responsibilities
- Partner with executives, R&D, product, clinical and engineering teams to define the Generative AI roadmap and identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes, productivity, quality and efficiency. Lead initiatives from concept through production.
- Architect scalable platforms for LLMs and small language models, RAG, agentic and multi-agent systems, knowledge graphs, multimodal models, copilots and autonomous workflows. Define reference architectures, reusable frameworks, design standards and cloud-native deployment approaches.
- Guide healthcare-specific foundation-model adaptation and fine-tuning using enterprise and clinical data. Establish standards for benchmarking, validation, monitoring and continuous improvement; evaluate models and tools, and track model quality, adoption and business impact.
- Lead architecture reviews and implement governance covering fairness, transparency, explainability, safety, security, risk, regulatory compliance, human oversight and audit readiness. Mentor AI and engineering leaders and represent the organization in technical and research forums.
Requirements
A B.E./B.Tech., master's degree or PhD in computer science, AI, machine learning, data science, computational statistics, applied mathematics or a related quantitative discipline; 15+ years in software engineering, AI, machine learning or data science, including 8+ years developing ML/AI systems and 5+ years specializing in Generative AI. Enterprise AI transformation leadership and experience architecting and deploying production-grade AI platforms are required. Required technical expertise spans foundation models, RAG and GraphRAG, agents, prompt engineering, fine-tuning, RLHF, multimodal AI, Python, NLP, analytics, AI frameworks, cloud/MLOps and vector databases. Listed technologies include GPT, Llama, Mistral, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Med-PaLM, BioGPT, MedBERT, T5, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face, LangChain, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, AutoGen, CrewAI, Azure AI Foundry, Azure AI Services, AWS AI/ML Services, Google Vertex AI, Kubernetes, Docker, MLflow, Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, Chroma and Azure AI Search.
Preferred
Experience in medical devices, digital health or regulated healthcare; AI research contributions; familiarity with FDA guidance, ISO 13485, IEC 62304, IEC 82304 or SaMD; relevant clinical, regulatory, biomedical or digital-twin applications; or leadership of an AI Center of Excellence.
