About this role
American Express seeks a Staff AI Engineer for its Service Enablement Platform team in Bengaluru or Chennai, India, on a hybrid schedule. The team supports servicing platforms for disputes, fraud, credit, collections, back-office cases, card issuance and automation. This senior, hands-on individual contributor will help define and deliver enterprise-scale agentic AI systems for a regulated financial-services environment.
Responsibilities
- Set technical direction for agentic AI architecture, autonomy boundaries and system design; build and operate production systems used across products.
- Develop shared agent frameworks and orchestration, planning, tool-use and memory strategies, retrieval and grounding pipelines, LLM inference and model gateways, and evaluation, observability and safety tooling.
- Write production code, review designs and guide tradeoffs involving safety, reliability, scalability and cost. Coordinate architecture across platforms and build proofs of concept with emerging technologies and infrastructure.
- Partner with Product, UX, engineering, risk, compliance and cybersecurity teams to take initiatives into production, support secure rollouts and meet regulatory requirements. Evaluate new models and techniques, mentor engineers and promote engineering best practices. The role is described primarily as an individual contributor, though people development or direct-report management may be in scope for some opportunities.
Qualifications and technology:
- The posting identifies Python, Go and TypeScript; REST, gRPC and some tRPC; AWS and/or GCP, Kubernetes, Kafka and event-driven systems; and orchestration tools including LangGraph, LangChain and Airflow.
- Relevant experience includes integrating commercial and open-source LLMs into agentic workflows; using frameworks such as LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel or CrewAI; PyTorch and Hugging Face for embeddings, fine-tuning and inference; some TensorFlow exposure; and schema, validation and state management with Pydantic or Zod. Evaluation, observability, safety and reliability are emphasized.
Preferred qualifications include a Computer Science or Information Systems degree, or equivalent with at least 8+ years of work experience; experience delivering large-scale enterprise systems and GenAI solutions; communication and presentations to senior leadership; and cross-functional influence and leadership.
