Senior ML Engineer

Standard Chartered Bank seeks a Senior ML Engineer in Chennai, India, for a permanent, office-working role (Global Grade: Band 6). As a senior individual contributor, the engineer will deliver production-grade machine learning, generative AI and agentic AI solutions from business requirements and design through deployment, monitoring and improvement. The role supports predictions, recommendations, search and business growth in a regulated banking environment.

Responsibilities

• Translate business goals into scalable AI systems; design, code, train, test, validate and deploy enterprise solutions using structured and unstructured data. Apply NLP, computer vision, classification, clustering, deep learning and supervised and unsupervised techniques, selecting appropriate algorithms, software, hardware and integration methods.
• Build governed, observable agent workflows with tool calling, retrieval, memory, sandboxed execution, policy and approval controls, tracing, telemetry and automated evaluations. Establish efficient, automated processes for data analysis, model development and validation.
• Implement audit trails, role-based access control, regulatory controls and Responsible AI standards. Test production readiness, identify and escalate delivery and AI risks, and use guardrails against hallucination, unsafe actions, data leakage and compliance violations.
• Monitor model and system performance, address degradation or control gaps, and improve solutions after delivery. Use GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, specification-driven development and open specification workflows to improve engineering quality and consistency.
• Deliver agreed scope to schedule and quality standards; guide and mentor colleagues, and collaborate with engineering, product, design, infrastructure and programme teams.

Requirements

• 8–12 years of relevant hands-on experience in machine learning and software engineering, including development, validation, deployment and improvement of enterprise AI/ML solutions.
• Mandatory master's degree with a specialisation in Technology; English language skills.
• Skills in ML, NLP and computer vision engineering; enterprise ML and GenAI delivery; agentic AI harness engineering, tool use, retrieval and evaluation.
