Lead Engineer - Applied AI

Barclays is hiring a Lead Engineer - Applied AI in its Bengaluru office to design, develop and deploy scalable, secure agentic AI solutions that meet business and functional requirements. The role sits in the Chief Technology Office and is a permanent, full-time position.

Responsibilities

• Build and improve software and AI capabilities for customers and colleagues, including APIs and applications that integrate large language models. Deliver maintainable, performance-optimized code from system design through completion.
• Work with product managers, designers and engineers to define requirements, plan solutions and integrate them with business needs. Participate in code reviews, share knowledge, apply secure coding practices and implement unit tests.
• At Assistant Vice President level, advise stakeholders, take ownership of operational effectiveness and risks, strengthen controls and help resolve complex issues. Depending on whether the position carries people-management responsibilities, lead and coach a team or guide collaborative assignments across specializations.

Required qualifications and skills:

• A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, mathematics or a related discipline. Experience building software at scale on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, with fluency in Python, Java or Go and associated frameworks.
• Hands-on experience with generative and agentic AI frameworks such as LangGraph, LangChain, CrewAI, Strands SDK or Google ADK; familiarity with MCP and A2A protocols; and an understanding of LLMs and prompt writing for agents.
• Experience deploying agentic AI solutions using services such as AWS Bedrock, Azure AI Foundry or Google Cloud Vertex AI. Understanding of AI use in software development and legacy-code transformation, plus experience developing APIs and integrating LLMs into applications.
• Ability to complete system design with limited supervision, solve problems and communicate results clearly to stakeholders and leadership.

Preferred

Familiarity with supervised or reinforcement-learning fine-tuning techniques and knowledge of banking or financial products and services.
